Blakiston's fish owl once lived widely in Hokkaido.
In 1980s, the number of owls decreased to less than 100, and were on the verge of extinction.
Causes of decline
/ Decrease of large-diameter trees with hollows necessary for reproduction due to deforestation and agricultural land development.
/ Decrease in riparian forests due to dam construction and river improvement
/ Decrease in fish as food due to changes in the river environment
/ Traffic accidents due to expansion of transportation network
